My Reading Taste

vivatramp book blogs uk reading taste

I'm gearing myself up for a quiet evening in, complete with Dexter season 2 (gotta get that annual re-watch in) and a big bowl of soup, but I thought I would come on here, a day later than my usual Wednesday and Sunday schedule, and share with you a list, a brain fart if you will, of my reading taste. This post was inspired by Vanessa at chboskyy - subscribe to her because she's great. These are some of the things that draw me to books - leave me your list in the comments below so I can see if I missed anything out! Also, feel free to leave me recommendations based on the following requirements.

roadtrips - long, descriptive, road trips
post-apocalyptic worlds far removed from my own
anything post-apocalyptic, actually
Gothic tales of misty moors and weather-beaten people
oblique short stories
difficult or taboo subjects
dystopia
fucked up female protagonists
fucked up protagonists, in general
poems by the sea
anything dark and brooding
patti smith, just...yeah
books that look at mental health
tales of the South
magical realism, on occasion
intense platonic friendships
coming of age tales with witty little bastards at the helm
the forest as the home
sibling bonds
bold and bright trade paperbacks
serial killers, psychopaths and sociopaths
women that don't want anyone's help
books that look at identity and 'the self'
characters in remote places
'make u think' poetry
big books that chart a characters lifetime
thrillers that are actually good
mixed media or contemporary forms
narratives about grief that make me cri evrytiem

What does your reading taste look like?

The Butterfly House

1 vivatramp adventures with bee butterfly house uk

My Mum is obsessed with butterflies to the point where it's sort of unnerving. Much to my disdain, Mum had a couple of vouchers for the North Somerset Butterfly House to use up and so, on the last day of the season, an hour before closing, we decided to spend an hour at the 'secret paradise in the heart of the Westcountry'....might use that in my Twitter bio.

Creative Prompts 4

vivatramp book blog creative prompts for creative writing photography

I don't want to jump the gun, as it were, but I am currently in such a good place creatively. The other morning I wrote and submitted two poems to Severine, an online literary and art journal, on the topic of wanderlust. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that one of my submissions ends up in the finished issue. If you'd like to submit your own art / poetry / creative non-fiction / short fiction, head over to their website for more information!

As if that wasn't enough spontaneity for one week, I decided the following day to write a poem to submit to The Poetry Society's National Poetry Competition - despite the fact that I only had a couple of days left to do so. I have no idea what possessed me but I sat at my laptop and transformed an old poem of mine (an ode to Robert Smith nonetheless) into something completely new and something that I felt worthy of recognition  -- even if it's just me recognising that I can write and it's what I want to do until I'm six feet under. I felt horrendous the following day - my joints ached,  my cognitive abilities were non-existent and I could barely move - but I'm proud of myself for taking part. November will, hopefully, be another creatively productive month. I was intending to do Nanowrimo to make progress on my post-apocalyptic collection of prose and poetry but I'm actually leaning towards using the month to create some sort of poetry chapbook. The other morning I woke up thinking in poetry and I want to monopolize on that. We'll see - maybe I'll work on both. If you're thinking about participating in Nanowrimo, or just thinking about beginning a new creative project, you should watch Leena's video on finally giving a fuck. Let me know what projects you're currently working on below!

If you're new here, you may not know that I have a creative prompt series where every month I share some words or ideas to help inspire your future creative works. These prompts are extremely vague for a reason; I want you to be able to use them for whatever you see fit: for stories, pieces of art, a series of photographs, ideas for blog posts, whatever takes your fancy! Take them literally or have a bit of fun with them. It's up to you.
