My Reading Habits & My Reading Nook

vivatramp lifestyle book blog blogger uk my reading habits tag reading nook dunthorne july sarah waters in bloom

I always seem to be discussing books over here at Vivatramp but I've yet to really touch upon my reading habits and the places that I read from. Luckily, I stumbled across a tag created by The Book Jazz that resolves that great oversight. Thank God, amirite?! If you'd like to get involved, just answer the questions that I've left at the bottom of this post! Feel free to share your very own habits in the comments below too!

i'm very much a reader of habit
I'm usually tucked away in bed underneath a blanket mountain when I read. My V-shaped pillow is one of my favourite reading tools - gotta respect dat lumbar support, guys. Comfort is hugely important for me and I usually find that at home so that's where I do most of my reading.

however, there are a couple of OTHER places that i love to read in

Firstly, reading a good book from the comfort of a sunbed is one of the greatest things in life - especially when accompanied by a parasol and ice cold Fanta Lemon. Secondly, I also like to read from the comfort of my new reading nook, as pictured at the bottom of this post. It's mismatched but it's seriously cosy and sat right next to my big windows so I can stare at all my neighbours...

i'll mark pages with whatever i can get my hands on
I've been known to rest limbs in between the pages if  there is nothing else in my immediate vicinity...I do have a nice little collection of postcards, page markers and Book Depository bookmarks that I use too but I'd quite like to make my own bookmarks at some point.

i read chapter by chapter
I don't like to just stop on pages or allot myself a certain amount to read. I find it harder to pick books back up if I haven't left them at a clear reference point y'see!

I'll have a drink by my side but i don't tend to eat
Heaven forbid I get any food on my books! I sip my drink every now and again because, as I've just said, I read chapter by chapter but otherwise I just wait.

i like to have a little background noise whilst i read

I'll maybe have some music on low in the background, like the Submarine soundtrack, or I'll have my window open to listen to the noise of the street and the fields that follow it. I don't like a lot of noise though so as soon as my family start coming home I'll put my book down for a few hours.

i usually stick to one book at a time
I seriously envy readers that can read a few things at a time but it just doesn't work for me.

i can read everywhere if i set my mind to it
I got sent a Bagabook* book cover a while back, pictured above, and I use it to keep my books in good condition whilst I'm travelling about. It's actually pretty useful and I love how ridiculously bright it is. If  you're interested, you should check the website out because they have a few different ranges featuring book covers, tote bags, iPad covers and scarves. Swag.

i'm trying to improve my ability to read aloud

I usually just stick to silently reading in my head but I've been trying to make more of an effort where reading aloud is concerned. I really struggle to enunciate properly when I'm reading aloud and since it's something that comes up in my day to day life at university, I've been really trying to improve upon my skill. I always read poetry aloud though - that stuff needs to be heard!

i don't like to read ahead, nor do i skip pages

I think it sort of defeats the purpose of reading for pleasure. If I'm not enjoying a book, I will just put it down. When I was younger, I did go through a phase of reading the ending first just so I could see how they got to that point though...I was a strange child.

i like to keep my books looking like new
I don't mind a second hand book with a slightly creased spine but you will never see me fold pages over or crazily break the spines or whatever. It's just a personal preference.

I have been known to write in poetry books but not prose

I only tend to write in books if they're old academic textbooks or shitty cheap editions that I don't mind messing up a little. I prefer to write all my notes down in my notebooks and use page markers to remind me of particular passages.

i tag...

I'm going to tag anyone who wants to do it! If it's something you're interested in doing, be sure to leave the link to your post below so I can have a nose at your reading habits. I love that whilst reading is quite a specific thing, it can be undertaken in a variety of different ways and it means different things to different people. Are your reading habits similar to mine? If not, how are they different? I'll be back soon but in the meantime have a lovely weekend!

p.s If you'd like to do The Book Jazz' tag, all you have to do is answer the following:
Do you have a certain place at home for reading? Where do you like to read? Bookmark or random piece of paper? | Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter / certain amount of pages? | Do you eat or drink while reading? | Music or TV while reading? One book at a time or several at once? Reading at home or everywhere? | Reading aloud or silently in your head? Do you read ahead or skip pages?  |  Break the spine or keep it like new? | Do you write in your books? Who do you tag?

  1. I used to be that kid, too - I would always read the ending first. I don't do it anymore either, lol. It definitely takes some of the joy and the journey out of the story. Thanks for sharing your reading habits, I am definitely going to participate in this tag! :)

  2. I love this! I always read in bed before I fall asleep, every night. Ever since I was little it helped me sleep. If I have the time and or I'm really engrossed I'll read all day on the sofa and I'm a fan of reading in the bath. I cringed a little reading how nice you are to your books... I turn over corners to mark pages, get pages wrinkled with steam (bath reading...) lose crumbs in them, accidentally bend covers and crease spines... They are well loved? I need to be a better book mama...

  3. I loved reading this post! I do a lot of things similar to you - especially reading out loud sometimes, as I hate my accent and am trying to improve my pronunciation. I don't read chapter by chapter though, I can literally leave mid-way through a sentence and pick it right back up hours later!

  4. I don't like a lot of background noise either, for some reason my ability to concentrate leaves entirely if the TV is on xx

  5. I hate background noise when I read unless I'm on transit and it's unavoidable. My household is usually quiet but since my aunt decided to visit for a few months, it's been nonstop music and loud discussions which limits my reading time to late into the night when she's asleep and the household is quiet again.

I'm also glad you tagged everyone so I had a go answering these in a post :)

  10. This was a lovely tag to read! Growing up acting, I had lessons in how to read aloud both poetry and prose - I'm so glad I did, it's been really helpful not just in school and uni but for presenting at work too.
